A few good story ideas …. part two

by Ann Wright, August 5, 2010

In the second of two posts with some ideas for stories to boost your media relations.

Events

What’s happening at your offices or factory?  For example are you holding a big celebration for your bicentenary? Is this something that might interest someone other than your wife and mother?  Can you imagine boasting about it to your friends in the pub?  Then get it out there!  And if it’s something that might create a good picture, then all the better.

Charity

Have your staff rowed the Channel?  Done the marathon? Are they all dressing up in pink to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Day? These can be a great local stories.

New personnel

This is generally one for trade press – but if you’re Virgin, or Marks and Spencer, or Sky Television – then it would certainly be of general interest, and even if not, it might be a good story for the business  pages

Big orders and new premises

Again, generally for trade press, but use your own judgement. If, for example, you’ve got an amazing new concept in office design, then this might interest the wider media.

Awards

These are great – they boost your business’s reputation and give you credibility. A good story for the trade press – who might indeed have sponsored them – and possibly for the local press if you’re a big employer. Unless it’s an Oscar or a Bafta, when it’s a whole different story
