I was looking through some old BBC notes this morning, and came upon this list of video tips.
It dates from when I worked on Crufts for the BBC, and I have no hesitation in sharing it in full.
I was giving some advice to someone who was going out to self-shoot (ie do the filmings themselves, rather than with a camera operator) some dogs.
- Get a good variety of sizes of shot – wide and close up – especially lots of close ups of dogs faces!
- Get shots of dogs at dog level – film from low down
- Don’t do moves with the camera
- Don’t follow the action – leave the camera in one position
- Let the dogs enter and leave the frame
- Don’t film against a window or bright light (eg the sun) try to get the light to cast on the subject
- Don’t forget to film yourself. Practice holding the camera in your palm at arms length from your face; flip the little screen around so you can see your shot, then flip the screen back to make sure you’re looking into the lens and not the screen
- Avoid filming in a place with a lot of background noise – particularly where music is playing
These video tips might be heavily dog related but they are all valid for any filming you might do.
